A helicopter crashes in New York

Two passengers dead and three in critical condition. The pilot survived and was rescued. The trip was organized by a company, Liberty Tours, that makes photographic tours around the city.

Two people died on Sunday (12.03.2018) and three others remain in critical condition after dropping a helicopter on the East River in New York, city authorities said. There was “at least one survivor, at least two deaths” in the accident, said Eric Philips, spokesman for the mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio. The helicopter crashed between Manhattan and Queens, near Roosevelt Island.

The plane had taken off in the United Arab Emirates and was flying to Istanbul, the Turkish ambassador in Tehran reported.

The Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) indicated that the device, model Eurocopter AS350, crashed around 7:00 pm local time (23.00 GMT) near the island of Roosevelt, located along the eastern side of Manhattan. The authorities of the Police of New York have announced for the next hours a press conference to give details about the event. The device was towed to a nearby heliport.

The authorities did not confirm the total number of passengers, although local media indicated that it was carrying six people and that the pilot was rescued. The newspaper “New York Post” indicated that the passengers were tourists. In videos uploaded to social networks you can see how a red helicopter drops water and turns on one of its sides, while the blades continue to turn.

Rescue teams were sent to the site near Manhattan’s 90th Street, north of the Upper East Side, said New York Police and firefighters. The fire chief highlighted the problems divers encountered in rescuing the victims, among other reasons due to the low temperatures of the water, the currents and the fact that the device sank some fifty feet deep.
