France qualified for the final of Russia 2018 by defeating Belgium 1-0 in St. Petersburg with goal from defender Samuel Umtiti in the 51st minute. His opponent on Sunday will be the winner of the duel between Croatia and England.
French coach Didier Deschamps said today that his team’s 1-0 win against Belgium in the semifinals of the World Cup “is something exceptional.”
“It’s something exceptional, I’m very happy for my players,” said the French strategist, who once again assessed the strength of their managers despite the youth. “They are young but there is character, mentality, it was hard today against a great team from Belgium,” the coach continued.
“That small goal is good for us, it’s a defender that marks him, we had to work a lot defensively,” he explained about the goal scored by defender Samuel Umtiti.
“Respect for my players, and all my technical staff”
Despite the victory, Deschamps said the advantage could have been greater than having taken advantage of the chances that France had of counterattack. “We could have taken more advantage with the cons at the end of the game,” said the trainer, who however did not detract from his direction.
“Chapeau my players, and all my coaching staff, let’s play this final,” he said.
For Deschamps, world champion as a player in 1998, this is a special duel after the final two years ago lost at home to Portugal in the European Championship.
The technician confessed that the defeat “is not digested, it is still there”. “Tomorrow we will calmly see who is playing”, closed Deschamps, who is looking to win his first title as coach of the “bleus”.
