Thumb sucking is an endearing habit. In general child  suck his or her thumb, or a finger as they find a way of their self-soothing and helps them to fall asleep.

Thumb sucking habit can cause many dental issues and it is important to break a child of this habit before the permanent teeth start to arrive in order to prevent problems with tooth alignment and development of the mouth.

Thumb-sucking has long-term negative consequences like narrowing of the jaw, shrinking the airway, altered breathing patterns, improper teeth position, speech issue, change face shape, abnormal tongue rest.

Suggestions to Combat this habit:

  • Start tackling issue at early stage:

Parents should start tackling the issue at the early age, because the young this will be done, the easier it will be.

  • Introduction of solid food

After 6 months of age, introduce your child to tougher and solid food. This aid in not relying on thumb-sucking for oral feedback.

  • Notice and praise them

Notice when the child is not sucking a thumb and praise him or her for this, rather  than scolding when the child sucking the thumb.

  • Catch that specific causes of anxiety

Many children suck their finger or thumb when they feel anxious. Catch that specific causes of anxiety for your child that might prompt thumb sucking.

  • Consult a doctor

Ask your child’s dentist to support and encourage the child to break a thumb or finger-sucking habit.
