They are expected to determine a date for a meeting with the foreign ministers, requested by Iran. The meeting was attended by representatives of Russia, China, France, the United Kingdom and Germany with the Iranian Government.

Experts from the countries signing the 2015 nuclear agreement, with the exception of the United States, which left it a month ago, met on Thursday (07.06.2018) for the first time in Tehran to study formulas that guarantee the future of the pact.

The meeting, behind closed doors, brought together representatives of Russia, China, France, the United Kingdom and Germany with the Iranian side, headed by the head of the executive committee of the Foreign Ministry’s nuclear agreement, Ismail Baqai.

It is likely that a date will be determined for a meeting at the level of foreign ministers, requested by Iran, according to the official agency IRNA, which stressed that this is the first meeting of the joint commission of the nuclear agreement that is held in Tehran.

A new mechanism

The main issue addressed today was the design of a mechanism that allows the implementation of the nuclear pact after the withdrawal of the US. and Iran to obtain the benefits of relief from economic sanctions, as stipulated in the agreement.

The pact, signed in 2015 between Iran and the Group 5 + 1 (USA, Russia, China, France, the United Kingdom and Germany), limits the Iranian atomic program in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions against Tehran.

Since the departure of the US from the agreement on May 8, Iran has held several rounds of consultations with the rest of the signatories to study if their interests are guaranteed and remains in this way in the pact.

The sanctions that the US has reimposed affect European companies and, although the European Commission (EC) has activated the so-called “blockade statute”, many companies have already reported their withdrawal from Iran.
