It is the first visit of a Chinese Foreign Minister to North Korea in eleven years. The North Korean leader had made a secret visit in late March to Beijing to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met in Pyongyang with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to discuss “bilateral cooperation” and the situation in the region following the historic inter-Korean summit. According to Chinese government sources there was also talk of a total dismantling of the North Korean nuclear arsenal.
South Korea: the time of the patriots
It is the first visit of a Chinese Foreign Minister to North Korea in eleven years. It is less than a week after the summit in which Kim Jong-un and the South Korean president, Moon Jae-in, agreed to work to achieve the “complete denuclearization” of the peninsula.
Kim and Yi “discussed various issues in depth” such as “the development of friendly and cooperative relations” between the two countries, as well as “other matters of mutual interest such as developments, the situation of the Korean peninsula”, according to the North Korean news agency KCNA.
Yi’s two-day trip to Pyongyang included a meeting with his North Korean counterpart, Ri Yong-ho. The North Korean leader had made a secret visit in late March to Beijing to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Although the North Korean state media have not mentioned anything about it, it is taken for granted that the Chinese and North Korean foreign ministers also spoke about the expected meeting in the coming weeks between Kim Jong-un and the president of the United States. UU., Donald Trump, to discuss the possible denuclearization of the regime.
Analysts are likely to see Xi Jinping himself visit North Korea after Pyongyang and Washington hold what would be their first summit since the end of the Korean War.
