The North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, reiterated his commitment “consistent and immutable” for the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, and expressed his desire that this process is carried out in a “progressive”, according to details state agency KCNA .

The North Korean leader said that the issue of denuclearization must be resolved through “effective dialogue and constructive negotiations” with the United States, and called for efforts “to reach a solution in accordance with the interests of both parties through a new method and in a new era”.

Kim spoke like that in Pyongyang where he meets with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. During this meeting, which is the first of a Russian foreign minister for 9 years, Kim reaffirmed his commitment to the abandonment of nuclear weapons on the Korean peninsula and expressed his hope that both this process and the relations between Pyongyang and Washington “are resolved progressively.”

For his part, the Russian foreign minister praised Kim for his contacts with South Korea and the United States, stressed Moscow’s support for its commitment to denuclearize and said that the situation of the Korean peninsula has entered a “stability phase.”

The key task before the June 12 summit is to resolve the agenda. The main obstacle is probably the concept of “denuclearization”, as both sides say they are in favor, but there is a deep gap between their definitions. Washington wants North Korea to quickly relinquish all its nuclear weapons verifiably in exchange for relief in sanctions. But analysts say North Korea will not be willing to give up its nuclear deterrent unless it is given guarantees that the United States will not try to overthrow the regime.
