The #MeToo antiacoso campaign (me too), led by women, has been named 2017 by the American magazine Time.
The campaign grew out of allegations of sexual harassment against American film producer Harvey Weinstein, actor Kevin Spacey and other personalities, and motivated millions of men and women to share their stories of sexual harassment and aggression.
Time made the announcement this Wednesday (06.12.2017). The cover reads “The silence breakers” (the ones that broke the silence). “The voices that launched a movement”, also accompanies the text.
“People who have broken their silence about sexual abuse and harassment cover all races, all economic classes, all occupations and, virtually, all corners of the world,” the magazine said.
“Their collective anger has caused immediate and shocking consequences, because of their influence in 2017, they are Time Person of the Year,” he added.
The movement began spontaneously in October this year when actress and activist Alyssa Milano followed a suggestion on Facebook and wrote on her Twitter account: “If you have been harassed or sexually assaulted, write ‘me too’ (me too) in response to this tweet. ”
The hashtag was tweeted almost a million times in 48 hours. The #MeToo movement was created by activist Tarana Burke on Twitter a decade ago to raise awareness about sexual violence.
The two finalists were Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump, accused of sexual misconduct by numerous women. Trump took the title last year.
Other of the “runners-up” designated by the magazine are the special prosecutor for the “Russian plot” Robert Muller and the football player Colin Kaepernick, initiator of the protests against racism in the fields of the NFL (National Football League ).
