Kaleem Imam replaces Amjad Saleemi, assumes charge as Sindh IG and vows to improve the police system


KARACHI: Dr Kaleem Imam took charge as New Sindh IG on Wednesday. He has replaced Amjad Javed Saleemi as Sindh’s top cop. Formerly, Dr. Kaleem was serving as police chief of Punjab.

He had an orientation meeting with senior officials at Central Police Office (CPO) here, after assuming his office. Later he visited CM house, for a meeting with the Chief Minister, Syed Murad Ali Shah, related to security in the province.

On Dr Imam’s arrival at the Central Police Office (CPO) on Wednesday, he was presented a guard of honor. On this occasion several senior officials including DIG finance, DIG establishment, AIG operation Sindh welcomed him.

Chief Minister Shah directed the police chief to ensure peace and harmony in the province, particularly in Karachi. Furthermore, Murad Ali Shah directed him to take special steps to improve security conditions in Sindh.

The new Sindh IG, was urged to curb the rising street crimes in the province. Syed Murad Ali Shah said that his government will provide all necessary help in order to curb street crime in Sindh.

Dr Imam vowed to improve the police system and fully eliminating street crime from Karachi.

He also showed a strong resolve for fighting against crimes and announced that the police would work without any fear or favor.

He said the “martyrs” of the Sindh police were role models and their families were his responsibility. “I strongly believe in the principles of justice and fair play in all policing functions,” he added.

The IGP said that serving the community without fear and favor and assistance to other law enforcement agencies in providing a peaceful environment to the citizens of the province had been the distinctive feature of the police’s commitment.

He said that in order to overcome the upcoming challenges, his priorities would be “to sustain the prevailing best practices and to continuously improve the procedures to meet the emerging challenges”.

Sindh IG was also directed to take foolproof security measures for Muharram religious processions and gatherings.

The chief minister said, “I want to put an end to fear in Karachi.”

Besides, the police would work to proactively contemplate new initiatives by synthesizing workforce-centric proposals and not the least refining working environment, functional efficiency, organizational structure, human resource development and optimum utilization of the assets.

He pointed out that the motive of the police was to serve the people and fight against crimes with resolve.

He opined that the policing was a team work and no individual can achieve targets.

Earlier, Imam was welcomed at the CPO in Karachi by the Sindh AIG, Karachi AIG and other top police officers.

After the posting of the new IG major reshuffle has been expected within the Sindh Police department, sources said.

Declaring that merit and competence would be his priority, he asked the officers to ensure a better attitude towards the public.

The IG also asked the officers to take such steps which tended to raise the morale of the force.

Dr. Kaleem Imam’s Profile

Dr. Kaleem Imam born in Karachi in year 1962. He is amongst the most educated officers in the police department.

He holds a PhD degree in Politics and International Relations from the International Islamic University, Islamabad, also an LLM in Human Rights from the University of London’s prestigious School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), in addition to a Master’s degree in Philosophy.

According to his past record, Kaleem Imam has worked on high-profile posts. He worked as SP at Sibbi and Naseerabad, SSP of Quetta, Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Chief security officer to the Prime Minister, Director of the National Police Bureau, IG of the National Highways and Motorway Police.

Internationally, he also held the post of Deputy Police Commissioner (Operations) for the African Union – United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), also served in UN peacekeeping operations in Mozambique and Liberia.
