According to research, mothers who give birth to boys are 79 per cent more likely to suffer from postnatal depression.

The findings show that this appears due to increasing levels of inflammation in the immune system caused by having a son which may change chemical balances in the brain.

The study also suggested that women who face complications during childbirth are three times more likely to suffer from the condition.

Postnatal depression affects almost one in every 10 women triggering feelings of sadness and tiredness.

Postnatal depression is a type of mood disorder associated with childbirth.

The symptoms of the disease include extreme sadness, low energy, anxiety, crying episode, irritability and changes in sleeping or eating patterns.
