PESHAWAR: On Thursday night, five of a family were killed, while two others were injured in Hotel Afandi’s explosion that had occurred in Bilal Town area of Peshawar.
According to CCPO Qazi Jamil-ur-Rehman, the family originally came from Hangu to Peshawar for medical treatment and made their stay at the hotel. The family included a man identified as Kamran, his wife, mother, two children and two of his brother’s sons.
The sons of Kamran’s brother, who got burn injuries in the explosion, were shifted to Rawalpindi in life-threatening condition as there is no functional burn unit in Peshawar.
The blast occurred on the fourth floor of the hotel, in room number 408.
Police and rescue workers evacuated people from the hotel as fire engulfed the surroundings.
The CCPO told media that the nature of the blast had not been ascertained yet. He suspected the explosion having been occurred due to the accumulation of gas in the room.
AIG Shafqat arrived at the explosion site along with a bomb disposal squad.
The explosion was caused by a gas cylinder and not any explosive device, said the AIG.
While addressing media in Peshawar, Malik said that the explosion occurred after the gas cylinder was turned on for cooking purposes.
He added they found no proof of any explosive device at the hotel.
Although no terrorism threat has been reported in the explosion, police in Peshawar recently warned administrations of educational institutes and media houses to take strict security measures at their respective buildings, officials said.
