US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, spoke on the telephone for more than an hour of the conflict in Syria, the fight against terrorism in Central Asia and the Middle East, and the nuclear threat from North Korea.
In a statement, the White House explained that the two leaders reaffirmed their support for the joint statement that both adopted during the recent summit of the APEC forum in Danang (Vietnam), in which they committed to work for a “definitive defeat” of the group Jihadist Islamic State (IS) in Syria.
The conversation comes after Putin received Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Monday in the Russian city of Sochi on the shores of the Black Sea, a visit that was organized in secret and which has been reported today.
