The CIA “helped find the clue, find and stop a group of terrorists preparing explosions in the Kazan Cathedral of St. Petersburg,” the Kremlin reported.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called today (17.12.2017) his American colleague, Donald Trump, to thank him for the information provided by the CIA that allowed to thwart a terrorist attack in St. Petersburg.

The information provided by the CIA “helped to find the trail, find and stop a group of terrorists preparing explosions in the Kazan Cathedral of St. Petersburg and also in other busy places in this city,” the Kremlin said in a statement. .

Putin stressed that the information received was sufficient to locate the terrorists, apparently linked to the jihadist group Islamic State (IS). He also promised Trump that, “in case of receiving information about terrorist threats against the US, the Russian secret services will transmit it immediately to their American colleagues through the relevant channels, as has been the case in the past,” he added. .

The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB, former KGB) announced this week the arrest of seven people planning a series of attacks in St. Petersburg, the former tsarist capital of Russia. In particular, the group intended to perpetrate a suicide attack today, Sunday, in the Kazan Cathedral, which is located on Nevsky Avenue, the most frequented in the city.

In a bomb attack in the subway of the metropolis 15 people lost their lives on 3 April. Some 50 were injured in the attack, attributed to a 22-year-old man from Kyrgyzstan who also died. Russia estimates that thousands of people from the former Central Asian Soviet republics joined the terrorist organisation.
