Virat Kohli had a disappointing campaign in the IPL this year and he might have lost his cool more often than not all summer over Royal Challengers Bangalore’s soppy performances but he signed off with a really cool gesture at the Feroz Shah Kotla.

Kohli, an out-and-out Delhi boy, was playing on his home turf against the home team, Delhi Daredevils. But the RCB skipper was a clear crowd favourite. The near-packed Kotla cheered every time Kohli found the fence in a gritty knock of 58 (on a rather tricky T20 pitch) and every time the ball went to him on the field.

Despite another heroic effort by Rishabh Pant and a brisk cameo by Mohammed Shami, RCB somehow prevailed to defend a par total to finish a dismal season with a semblance of dignity.

Kohli had stressed on the need for his players to enjoy themselves after bowing out of the IPL last week. On Sunday, the Royal Challengers, last year’s runners-ups, certainly did enjoy themselves.

The star-studded side finished last on the points table and Kohli was named “stylish player of the match”. The 28-year-old was then seen, in a video that has now gone viral, jumping over the advertisement hoardings and gesturing towards a fan in the stands. He then hurled his trophy at the lucky fan before walking back to resume his position near the presentation dias.

Kohli has been the most widely followed Indian cricketer since Sachin Tendulkar retired in 2013. He was in superb form in IPL 2016, hammering 973 runs and four hundreds, a record for any single season.

His next assignment with India is the ICC Champions Trophy which starts in June.
