Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has Thursday issued contempt of court show-cause notice to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan.

The election commission announced this morning verdict on Imran Khan’s petition that challenged ECP’s jurisdiction to hear contempt pleas.

The five member Commission resumed hearing of the case in Islamabad on Thursday. The Commission ruled that it is within the ECP`s powers to take action on contempt of court.

Later, the election commission adjourned the hearing till August 23.

It should be mentioned here that the ECP reserved the verdict on Imran Khan’s petition in the previous hearing.

In the previous hearing on July 25, After the arguments by Imran Khan’s counsel Babar Awan and Akbar S. Babar’s counsel completed, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) retired Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan wrapped up the hearing and reserved the verdict.

Appearing before the five-member bench, Babar Awan said the ECP is not entitled to kick-start contempt proceedings as Contempt of Court Act 1976 is no more effective.

The PTI’s counsel further said the Constitution of Pakistan entitles Supreme Court of Pakistan and high court alone for the contempt proceedings, adding it is imperative for a contempt proceeding that the ECP has the corresponding law.

It should be mentioned here that the ECP had issued the contempt notice to Imran Khan on January 24 over his remarks about the commission.
