Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Association (PPMA) President Qazi Mansoor in his statement warned that the prices of medicine are expected to hike by 400%. He added that the production cost has increased because sales tax is being imposed on the import of raw materials for drug manufacturing. The PPMA president predicted that the medicine that is now sold for Rs100 will be going up to Rs500 and urged the government to reevaluate its decision and withdraw sales tax of raw materials.
Moreover, Qazi stated that Pakistan imports 90% of raw materials for medicine manufacturing. In October 2020, the price of 253 medicines was increased from 22 to 35% by the Drug Regulatory Authority (DRAP).
Earlier, Dr. Faisal Sultan, the Special Assistant to the PM said that the hike in medicines price imposed by the DRAP was ‘inevitable’ to ensure the availability of the medicines.
Don’t you think the government should take measures to provide necessities such as healthcare at an affordable price?
