According to media sources, students and their parents staged a protest on Friday outside Karachi’s Government Degree Girls College Nazimabad against the management for forcing female students to take off their shoes, scarves, dupattas and burqas outside the college premises.

Students were asked to take off their shoes, veils, scarves and burqas outside the college building so that they could be checked ahead of Intermediate exams to prevent cheating.

The students complained that the men outside the college were taking videos of them while they were forced to take off their veils.

“Girls who never took off their veils, even in front of their relatives, were left traumatized by this incident as they entered to the examination hall crying to give their exam,” said one parent.

Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Karachi Chairperson Prof Inam Ahmed told a media source that to ensure that no cheating material and mobile phones were carried inside the college building, the female staff were told to check the students.

“This step was taken to prevent cheating during the examination as parents sometimes help their children by providing them cheating material and mobile phones inside the building,” he explained. “The female management was asked to conduct the checking and to stop the parents entering into the centre.”

He added that the board has taken notice of the incident and will investigate.
