Air pollution rises in India, officials call for a lockdown

Due to the health emergency of the air pollution in India, the Indian Supreme Court has called for a citywide lockdown. The Air Quality Index (AQI) of the capital city, New Delhi has fallen into a ‘very poor’ category. Moreover, the Supreme Court has asked the authorities to close the offices and move the employees to remote work to reduce dangerous air pollution. The situation caused the closure of schools and paused business work for four days.

The AQI stood at 343 on a scale of 500 in the capital which can cause respiratory illness if exposed for a long time. Moreover, the capital witnessed severe conditions such as the decrease in temperature index last which hit 499 last week.
