A fatwa has been issued by Egypt’s Al-Azhar University’s Supreme Ulema Council (SUC), saying all congregational prayers at mosques to limit the spread of the coronavirus pandemic should be banned.

This was done on the request of Pakistan’s President Dr Arif Alvi, who had asked the supreme council to issue a guideline for Muslims globally over preventive measures to curb the virus.

The fatwa also suggests that all public gatherings, including congregational prayers, can accelerate the spread of the lethal disease. Therefore, it added that government officials in Muslim countries are authorized to cancel congregational and Friday prayers.
