Huge Earthquake of Magnitude 8.2 Hits Alaska Peninsula

A huge and shallow earthquake of magnitude 8.2 hit the Alaskan peninsula late on Wednesday, sparking tsunami warnings across the Pacific Ocean.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake struck at 10:15pm on Wednesday (06:15 GMT Thursday) at a depth of 35km (22 miles).

No loss of life or property was reported, but tsunami warning sirens were blared close to a Walmart store in Kodiak, Alaska.

Tsunami warning coordinator with the NTWC Dave Snider said that the US states of California, Oregon and Washington and the Canadian province of British Columbia were not expected to see any substantial tsunami threats, Dave Snider,

Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy tweeted that authorities were reaching out to communities in the tsunami warning areas.
