Khalilzad calls on senior Afghan official to expedite peace process

On Monday, Zalmay Khalilzad, US special envoy to Afghanistan, held talks with a senior Afghan official in Kabul over ways to fast-track the peace process.

US-brokered peace discussions between the Afghan government and the militant group started in September but there’s been little headway and violence has escalated, with no certainty over whether international powers will pull out troops by May as initially intended.

In a statement, the US State Department said that Khalilzad and his team were touring Kabul and Qatar, adding that the US envoys would also visit other regional capitals as part of a task focused on working towards a just and robust political settlement and enduring and complete ceasefire.
