Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has recorded that 488 media professionals and journalists have been imprisoned all over the world and 46 have been killed. The NGO that battles for freedom began publishing annual records more than 25 years ago and has presented some strange statistics for 2021. RSF revealed that the number of journalists who were detained due to their work has been high since they started publishing their annual round-up in 1995, adding that the number has grown by 20% this year from the past, owing to the crackdowns in Hong Kong, Myanmar, and Belarus.
RSF also revealed that in all these years, the NGO has never seen a big number of female journalists receiving detention with a tally of 60. This is said to be a third more than 2020. Among all the countries, China tops the list of imprisoned journalists’ countries with 127 due to the national security law that was imposed on Hong Kong.
Myanmar is second on the list with 53 detainees. Moreover, Vietnam is in third with 43 followed by Belarus 32, and Saudi Arabia 31. Additionally, the increasing number of deaths is due to the declining situation in Iraq, Yemen, and Syria.
