Worldwide coronavirus cases exceed 90 million in fight with new variant

According to Reuters tally, global coronavirus cases crossed 90 million on Monday, as nations around the world scramble to acquire vaccines and continue to extend or restore lockdowns to fight new coronavirus variants.

Discovered initially in the United Kingdom and South Africa, the new Covid-19 variants are swiftly spreading globally.

The novel coronavirus has picked up momentum in the past few months with about one-third of total cases recorded in the last 48 days.

Europe remains the worst-affected area in the world with 25 million cases last week, followed by North and Latin Americas with 22.4 million and 16.3 million cases respectively.
