Coronavirus’ new variant Omicron has seen a considerable rise in Karachi as 11 members of a family in the city have been infected with it. Health officials confirmed that the patients arrived from Lahore and the virus was detected at the public health laboratory of Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS). They said that they received 20 samples, eleven of which were confirmed to be from the same family. The spread of Omicron is faster than the Delta variant that had infected many in the previous months.
The samples of the infected family were collected by the Sindh Health Department which was then sent to Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) where the experts detected and confirmed the existence of the Omicron variant. The presence of the variant was verified by conducting the Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO).
The severity of the infection hasn’t been identified yet. Pakistan confirmed that the case of Omicron has only seen an uprise. The first case was detected on December 13 and by the end of the month, the total cases have reached 75.
Do you think the Omicron threat is strong enough for the government to impose a lockdown in Karachi?
