Sugar barons close mills as they stop buying from farmers

Powerful sugar barons have shut their production units in an ostensible bid to reduce prices of sugarcane, which have gone beyond the support price.

In a recent meeting presided by Prime Minister Imran Khan, some members of the cabinet highlighted the issue and expressed worry over the deferral of sugarcane purchase by the sugar mills, causing problems for the farmers.

It was discussed in the meeting that most members of the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association had conspired in an attempt to close their mills as the sugarcane purchase price jumped to Rs225 per 40 kg compared to the official support price of Rs190 per 40 kg.
