Why Lockdown is Must Amid Coronavirus Outbreak

On Sunday, Pakistan shut down markets and public places in many major cities of the country due to the
coronavirus pandemic.

As of Tuesday, the number of coronavirus cases in the country also surged to 629.

According to the provincial governments of Northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Punjab, and Balochistan,
the authorities have advised the public to remain at home and shun socializing.

On Saturday, Punjab’s Chief Minister Usman Buzdar also announced a lockdown in the province from Saturday
night till Tuesday morning.

The Sindh and Balochistan provinces already announced the same restrictions to limit the spread of the virus.
Sindh has particularly taken some stringent measures and had announced the lockdown a couple of days
before the other provinces. Except for the grocery and medical stores, all other shops are closed and people
have been strictly advised to stay home and avoid unnecessary travel.

Coronavirus cases

The number of coronavirus cases in Pakistan surged to 629 after the country reported 160 new cases in the
last 24 hours.

According to the federal Health Ministry, so far 292 cases have been reported in Sindh, 137 in Punjab, 103 in
Balochistan, 31 in KP, 55 in Gilgit Baltistan, and 10 in the capital Islamabad. The virus has killed three people
in the KP and Sindh provinces while five recovered from the illness.

The majority of the new patients had recently returned from neighboring Iran, where the highest number of
cases have been reported after China and Italy.

The world has also gone into lockdown owing to the rapid spread of the pandemic. All European counties are in
virtual lockdown while India has India has placed more than 80 cities and districts across the country under
severe lockdown after cases of the coronavirus were detected there.

The state shutdowns came during a 14-hour voluntary curfew that Prime Minister Narendra Modi said would
check India’s capacity to battle the virus.

In a situation where the world is rattled by the killer pandemic’s depredations, it was imperative on the
countries’ part to take stringent measures to curb the spread of the virus. While routine life is severely disturbed
and thousands of people fear losing their jobs, it’s nevertheless far more important to save lives first.

It’s also important for the Pakistani public and the government to observe complete lockdown and take all
necessary measures to avoid the spread of the pandemic that has taken thousands of lives around the globe.
