Showbiz personalities like to stay in the limelight for both good and bad reasons! Here are some of the celebrities who have made it big in the entertainment scene not just due to specific crafts but also because of their antics and controversial discussions that have won them both fame and notoriety in equal measure.
Perhaps no one in Pakistan’s entertainment industry has been so much revered and reviled as televangelist and TV host Aamir Liaquat Hussain. His shows were slapped with numerous bans by PEMRA owing to the contentious content and his controversial discussions and antics. He has been at the center of several controversies, including his 2011 behind-the-scenes video showing the host using irreverent language with his colleagues during the show. The same video shows scoffing at his religious guests, crooning Indian songs and discussing Indian movies.
In 2016, Amir Liaquat was also criticized for re-enacting the suicide of a girl on TV, after which PEMRA banned him for three days. In 2008, Aamir Liaquat enthused anger as he made detestable comments against a minority community and dubbed their murder as an act of religious duty.
Although he has won many accolades and much respect across the entertainment fraternity thanks to his successful drama serials and movies, Khalil-ur-Rehman has also been a controversial figure mainly due to his bluntness and acerbic attitude towards his actors. Everyone in the drama and film industry is all praises for his expertise at scriptwriting and his impressive dialogues. The recent drama serial “Mere Paas Tum Ho” catapulted him to new heights of fame and popularity that, to some of his critics, has gone into his head, making him more arrogant than ever. His recent remarks about the infamous “Aurat March” earned him a great of flak, while he hurled profanities at a social activist during a live TV show recently. Although he has cleared his stance on the matter in multiple views, calling himself the biggest champion of women’s rights, his detractors are still unbelieving, demanding he apologize for his conduct.
If there’s one figure in the entertainment scene this is a constant subject of ridicule and mockery, it’s none other than Meera—thanks to her outlandish views about politics and her covert relationships with various media and non-media personalities. But the proverbial feather in her cap is her broken English which the actor continues to speak unabashedly. Her fans and critics have always been entertained by her spoken English which has earned her a great deal of notoriety, with many urging her to either properly learn the language or stop speaking it altogether. But it appears that the constructive criticism has fallen into deaf ears!
Sahir Lodhi is yet another entertainer that continues to amuse TV viewers. He has been a regular feature on many talk shows and his fake accent and his weird viewpoints about religion and revered national heroes have always drawn flak by all and sundry. He is also famous for his fondness to act and look like Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan. And he’s proven this proclivity through his facial expressions and body language. His sister and a popular talk show host Shaista Lodhi has also followed in her brother’s footsteps, garnering negative publicity through her controversial comments on many of her shows.
If there was one person who has amassed publicity for all the wrong reasons, it’s TV host and VJ Mathira. She became a center of attention through one of her night shows in which she received “applause” from a caller not because of her anchoring or acting skills or even looks, but for the physical contours of her body. That came as a shock for the viewers, who lashed out at her conduct, with many calling for a ban on the show. Her general conduct, which includes her way of speaking and her questionable dressing sense, is also quite controversial not just among general viewers but also among her showbiz fraternity.
